U2
Congratulations on the arrival of your new little one! The U2 examination, between day 3 - 10, is an important part of ensuring that your baby is healthy and developing properly. If you are in a clinic, the U2 examination will take place there. If you are at home, please make an appointment with your pediatrician as soon as possible. If the important examinations and screenings have not been conducted yet (for example by your Midwife), they should be done as soon as possible. For some diseases, it is very important to detect them as early as possible.
During the U2 examination, your baby will be measured, weighed, and given a physical examination. The doctor will pay special attention to the primitive reflexes and joint mobility, and will be particularly focused on recognizing congenital anomalies and any kind of birth trauma. The doctor will also examine the skin (for jaundice), sensory organs, chest and abdominal organs, sex organs, head, musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Your child will receive another dose of vitamin K to prevent bleeding. You will also be advised to give your baby vitamin D to prevent rickets (a bone disease) and fluoride to support the development of healthy teeth.
We understand that as a new parent, you may feel overwhelmed and unsure of what to expect. Do not hesitate to ask your doctor any questions you may have. You will receive advice on how to reduce the risk of sudden infant death and on nutrition. Your doctor will talk to you about what is important for your baby's healthy development.
The next check-up will be the U3 (Week 4-5). Make an appointment in good time. Best to contact your paediatrician soon after birth. A Familymemeber can take care of it too :)
