U9

U9

Congratulations, your child is now around 5 years old and getting ready to start pre-school! As you prepare for this exciting new phase, it’s important to make sure your child is healthy and developing properly. That’s where the U9 exam comes in.

During the U9 exam, your child’s doctor will conduct a thorough physical examination, including a vision test to check for any potential vision impairment. The doctor will also assess your child’s physical mobility and speech development, as well as their interests and fears. This information will help the doctor provide any necessary support as your child begins school. You will also receive advice on vaccinations, nutrition, physical activity, accident prevention, and responsible media usage. Additionally, your child’s dental health will be evaluated, and you will be informed of options for a dental screening.

As for your child’s development, you’ll be happy to hear that their gross and fine motor skills are likely improving rapidly. Running, jumping, and balancing on one leg with closed eyes are now within their skillset, as is copying a triangle and using a knife for cutting food. Their language and understanding are also expanding. They can count and recognize most colors. In terms of social interaction, your child probably has friends by now and can tell imaginative stories, such as a “journey to the moon.” They are also learning to accept different opinions and apologize for wrong behavior, and are likely very curious and asking lots of “why” questions.

As you prepare your child for the next big step in their life, take comfort in knowing that they are on track and developing well. Continue to follow your doctor’s advice and make sure they receive the care and support they need to thrive.

The upcoming health check-up, which is covered, will be the J1 exam when your child is between the ages of 12 and 14. In view of the long duration between 5 and 14 years, additional examinations such as U10 (7th/8th year of life) and U11 (9th/10th year of life) are recommended, although not all health insurance companies will cover the costs (we hope that this will change soon). Therefore, it's important to check with your insurance provider to determine if these exams are covered. Make an appointment in good time :)
