Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is an acute liver inflammation, which is caused by infection with the hepatitis A virus (HAV).

HAV is excreted in the stool of an infected person, making transmission possible through smear infection, contaminated drinking water, or tainted foods. While infections in early childhood may go unnoticed or present mild symptoms, the disease becomes more pronounced in older individuals, exhibiting symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, flu-like complaints, and jaundice. Fortunately, fatal outcomes are rare.

Hepatitis A remains prevalent in Southern and Eastern European countries, as well as in tropical and subtropical regions. This makes pre-travel vaccinations a prudent step in protecting oneself from potential exposure.

In Germany, certain groups at risk due to their profession or lifestyle are strongly encouraged to receive the hepatitis A vaccine. As there is no specific treatment for the disease, timely immunization is the primary defense against hepatitis A.

  • Vaccines are available for both children and adults, administered in two doses with an interval of 6 to 18 months.

While vaccinations are generally safe, some individuals may experience temporary reactions like redness or painful swelling at the vaccination site,  mild to moderate fever, chills, headaches, limb pain, fatigue, and abdominal discomfort. Elevated liver enzyme values are exceptionally rare and usually temporary. It's important to note that vaccine complications are exceedingly rare. Beyond typical reactions, such as temporary discomfort, complications might include allergic skin reactions, central nervous system disorders, or a slight decrease in platelet count.

It's important to consider the costs associated with vaccination. Inquiries with your health insurance company can provide clarity on coverage.

If you have any concerns about your child's reaction to the vaccine, don't hesitate to reach out to your doctor.
