Pneumococcal infections, caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, can be pretty serious. These bacteria can cause meningitis, pneumonia, and ear infections, and they spread through the air in tiny droplets.
To keep our children safe, the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) recommends
getting the basic immunization at the age of two months.
After turning two, the STIKO suggests considering the pneumococcal vaccine only if there are some specific health conditions.
Common reactions to the vaccine include redness or swelling at the injection site, which may also be painful. In the first days after vaccination, general symptoms such as fever, headaches, fatigue, and muscle and joint pain may occur. Severe side effects are rare.
Vaccines are an effective way to reduce the risk of infection and serious complications. If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to speak with your healthcare provider.
